When changing the size of your images for the web it is important to know that web browsers render the Pixel Dimensions and not Document Size, Resolution, Pixel/inch or DPI.

Why do my images look desaturated? Why has the hue shifted?

Most likely your images are using the Adobe 1998 Color Profile (or an equivalent), this is a wide gamut profile that creates a high quality image with many tonalities. It is intended for use in printing and displaying images on high-end computer monitors or displays. This profile is not supported on the majority of web browsers (only Firefox) and results in a larger file size.

When you upload your images to FotoVisura.com, the site automatically converts them to sRGB to ensure a standard view across all platforms, and to maximize performance with smaller file size. If your images are set to Adobe 1998, this ‘straight’ conversion will create a hue shift similar to viewing Adobe 1998 on a non-compatible browser.

But my images look good when I upload them to my website! Why is this?
Brief explanation: If you upload images set to a wide gamut profile, like Adobe 1998, and view them using Firefox, they will look as they should. However, all those not using Firefox will see the dramatic shift you are now experiencing. With the correct setup your images will look as you want them across all browsers.

As this is only a very brief explanation we highly recommend you read up on Color Management, good stuff to know these days.

How do I fix this problem?
We recommend exporting your web images as sRGB and then adjusting their tonality to meet your needs – this will ensure a standard view across the web.

The example below
In the top image you can see where to view your Color Profile settings. In the second image you can see that the image is in fact set to Adobe 1998 – notice the color hue and saturation of the towel. In the third image the image has been converted to sRGB, but has not yet been color corrected to regain the lost hue and saturation.

Our website is tooled for both high quality and high performance in a large scale environment. Generally speaking, it is one thing to display one hundred photos on a personal web site, and a completely more complex environment when displaying tens of thousands photographs to thousands of visitors every day – and there is a real need for a finely tuned system.

To be more specific, file size is mainly a product of color density and dimension. 90% of all browsers only display a limited color range (equivalent to an sRGB color space) – when an image is uploaded it is processed to match this color range and standardizes the relative Height and Width dimensions to display files that match the exact output very closely.
